Town crowned champions

Wythenshawe Town are this year’s Robinsons Brewery Saturday Amateur Cup champions after downing Failsworth Dynamos 3-0 in the final.

Town struck twice in the first half through Ben Brooks and an unfortunate own goal, to hold a comfortable lead going in at the break, before a late thunderbolt from Jake Williams added gloss to the final result.

Gary Brown’s men controlled the majority of the game against a stubborn Failsworth side, who struggled to impose themselves on their opponents.

The game began as a cagey affair as fierce winds hindered the two sides’ early bid for the upper hand.

The first notable chance fell to Wythenshawe’s Brooks who forced Ashley Shenton into a smart save from close range, before Jason Walley saw his 20-yard drive flash wide as Town pressed their opponents on to the back foot.

Moments later, Wythenshawe were awarded a penalty. Brooks made a nuisance of himself amongst the Failsworth defence and was impeded by Johnny Gordon. Walley assumed responsibility from the spot but fired over the bar after sending Shenton the wrong way.

That was to be only a brief respite for Failsworth, however, as Brooks eventually opened the scoring when he latched on to a ball over the top and lifted his shot over the Dynamos 'keeper.

Wythenshawe extended their lead on the stroke of half-time. John Rand’s throw-in caused confusion in the Failsworth penalty area and deflected off an unfortunate defender who inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net.

Asserting their dominance

The second half began in the same vein as the first had ended, with Failsworth penned in their own half while attempting to threaten on the counter-attack.

The closest they came was through Sam James' 20 yard effort. Jones was the beneficiary of some good work from defender Kyle McGovern, but his effort curled harmlessly wide of Jacob Luty’s goal.

As Dynamos fought for an way back into the tie, their cause was not helped by the dismissal of Nathan Martin, who was given a second yellow and consequently his marching orders just after the hour mark.

The game reached a slight nadir thereafter as both sides probed for a breakthrough, before Wythenshawe grabbed a crushing third.

Ash Woodhead and Remmie Williams demonstrated good link-up play as the latter teed up defender Jake Williams, and his long range strike thudded past Shenton in the dying moments.

There was time enough for Williams to chip a late penalty against the bar, but despite missing twice from the spot, the Cheshire League outfit ultimately had enough to overcome their opposition and were crowed Robinson’s Brewery Saturday Amateur Cup champions.
