Metrolink and its network is one of the most successful light rail systems in the UK. Operating in Greater Manchester and carrying nearly 20 million passengers every year, it consists of three lines which converge in Manchester city centre and serve the surrounding towns of Bury, Altrincham and Eccles. In addition, as part of a multi million pound investment, several extensions to the system are currently under construction or have been proposed extending the transport system to East Didsbury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Oldham, Rochdale, Media City UK and Manchester Airport. Further potential extensions to Stockport and the Trafford Centre are envisaged.
Metrolink are extremely active in their support of grassroots football with many joint initiatives taking place that have resulted in hundreds of footballers and their families benefiting from the relationship. This includes a positive and visible presence each and every month during the season via the Metrolink Team of the Month Award.
