Upcoming courses

Following the arrival of Manchester FA's new Referee Development Manager, the format of our Basic Referee Course is under review. As a result, there will be no new courses until July 2013.

Below is a link where you can register your interest in participating on a future Basic Referees Course.

Please note that this is NOT a link to booking on to a course but is simply to register your interest so that we can inform you when new courses are confirmed.

Who can become a referee?

Whether you aspire to officiate on the Premier League or to referee the local U9s team, we can provide you with the support, training and resources to assist you in achieving your goal.

Anyone over the age of 14 can become a referee. All that is required is a passion for the game and the successful completion of a training course. Many of our existing referees started on courses organised by Manchester FA. If you have just finished playing and you want to give something back to the game or if you wish to start a career in refereeing then read on!

What is the format of the Basic Referee Course?

Introduction to Refereeing Evening

This is compulsory for those aged 14-15 before deciding upon whether refereeing is right for you. A parent is strongly advised to attend so as to see for themselves the commitment required from their child.

At the end of the evening the individual will decide whether to embark upon the Basic Referee Course or decide refereeing is not for them at this stage. This event can also be attended by adults who want to know more about becoming a referee.

THOSE AGED 14-15 MUST ATTEND AN INTRODUCTION TO REFEREEING EVENING BEFORE BOOKING ON A COURSE.

Cost of event is £10

With Manchester FA's Basic Referee Course under new management and review, there will be no 'Introduction to Refereeing' evenings until July 2013.

Basic Referee Courses

This is the only type of referee course Manchester FA now provides.

Held throughout the year, the course involves approximately 20 hours of training. This will then be followed by a test on practical issues of refereeing and a written exam on the Laws of Association Football.

On passing the examinations, you become a level nine trainee referee.

Following the course you will need to referee six 11v11 games or six 9v9 games to obtain fully qualified status. Full details will be provided on the course.

YOUR QUALIFICATION IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL THIS HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN

The cost of the course for all age groups is £150 and includes the following:

  • Copy of latest Laws of the Game booklet
  • Interactive DVD on Laws of the Game
  • Pre-course study pack
  • All course materials
  • Qualified FA Referee Tutors during the course
  • Safeguarding Children training
  • 'Respect' training
  • CRB completion (over 18 only)
  • FA registration fee for one season
  • Full referee kit with embroidered MCFA and 'Respect' badges
  • FOX referee whistle
  • Lanyard for whistle
  • Red/yellow cards & holder
  • Match record cards
  • Assistant Referee flags
  • Flag bag
  • A list of league contacts
  • Certificate of qualification following initial six 11v11 or 9v9 games
  • Associate membership of the Referee/FA (RAFA) Association

Provision of the above ensures that delegates are fully equipped to referee following the course.
