Aim
The aim of the Manchester FA Referee Academy is to assist in the development, training and coaching of referees who have the potential to progress to senior referee status. It is designed to deliver specific and relevant training to young, ambitious, dedicated and talented referees.
Who can be part of the Academy?
A specialist group of officials from Level 7 to Level 4 who are keen, enthusiastic and dedicated; they exhibit the desire to progress to the next level.
These officials attend a specified number of meetings a year which are specifically aimed at improving not only their fitness levels but also include specific technical sessions with key note speakers in attendance.
Chris Kavanagh, a National List Assistant Referee and FA Tutor, is the Director of this group and has been inspirational in its continued success. Many officials are currently on the pathway to semi-professional football and beyond.
What are the benefits of joining the group should I meet the criteria?
• Provision of a coach to support your development
• Fortnightly physical training sessions held at Manchester Communication Academy under the guidance of Fitness Coach Nick Gibbons
• Technical classroom based training sessions conducted once a month throughout the season to enhance knowledge and skills
• Appointments to selected County Cup Ties
• Officiating Academy matches for Manchester Utd, Manchester City and Rochdale FC
• Opportunity to develop towards the North West Development Group that aims to progress officials to Level 3 and beyond
Tell me more about officiating in the Academy
Games are played on Saturday’s and Sunday’s at the training grounds of the clubs mentioned above with a variety of youth age groups. These games provide the opportunity for both players and referees to develop in a controlled and safe environment. Appointments are made via our Acting County Appointments Co-ordinator Richard Cooper following consultation with Chris Kavanagh. Officials will be expected to act as both referee and Assistant Referee and officiate in other Leagues around the County.
What are the criteria for joining the group for season 2012-13?
As mentioned earlier we are seeking people who are keen, enthusiastic and dedicated; they exhibit the desire to progress to the next Level and are currently on the promotion trail within the MFA promotion system. An informal meeting with Referee Development Manager and Chris Kavanagh will seek to establish the ambitions of each individual.
